FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 12, 2023: Echo Park, CA-based singer/songwriter Gregg Garvey is set to release his new single, a soulful country rock ballad titled “Mama I Don’t Know Why”. The song is taken from his new album on Los Angeles label Nomad Eel records titled “Time To Dream”. A true yet allegorical story, the song details his experience moving from his home state of Minnesota to where the “weather is nice” in California. The video takes the viewer along a meditative stretch of American freeway both dreamlike and self-reflective.

Garvey’s straight forward words and performance present an engagingly candid narrator that eases the listener into a slowly evolving sonic landscape of weightless slide guitars and strings floating above hypnotic piano, bass and drums.

Garvey says: “The song Mama I Don’t Know Why was written after moving to my current residence in Southern California. It was a reflection on the raw impulse I couldn’t entirely explain compelling me to go out into the world and explore and just see what happens. For me it’s also a declaration of purpose and motivation. The song tells the parent, and the world, “I don’t know why I am the way I am, but the more I follow what I appreciate, the more everything starts to make a lot more sense.” Not only does the song deal with finding one’s purpose, but also honoring that sort of epiphany.”

A lone acoustic guitar and vocal kicks off the video as Garvey settles into his car and ponders his choice to depart from the only home he knows. As the band launches into the song proper, he is on his way, his old red Mustang quickly becoming a minuscule vessel wandering a vast American expanse. As the music develops, we see through the driver’s eyes glimpses of rural and industrial spaces. Places forgotten, yet familiar. These visions are reminders of where Garvey’s from, creating an inner tension of needing to move on from his past, but dogged by uncertainty if he’s made a major life mistake in leaving. Moments such as a stop sign appearing in his passenger seat, and a scare with almost running out of gas on a mountain side inevitably provides a new-found determination to follow through to Garvey’s destination, as we see the abyss of open desert magically dissolve into the skyline of Los Angeles, vibrant and glowing. The city envelopes with its charm of sunshine and signature sights as his red car now shimmers. The music and visual combines to exhilarating effect. As the song and video reach their conclusion, we find Garvey at his last destination, or rather, destinations: The beach, and the open road. Both contain a sense of freedom and release, however as one ends the road West, the other road goes on forever.

VIDEO PRODUCTION

The video’s director and producer Maria Jorjezian has this to add:

“The song resonated with me because it captures the universal essence that speaks to artists worldwide. As artists, we offen grapple with the paradox of embracing our true selves while also seeking validation from our loved ones.

There is a constant internal struggle to break free from societal expectations while still being relatable to society. In creating the music video, I aimed to portray a contemporary journey that reflects this inner conflict while maintaining that classic all American road trip to Cali. Overall, the music video delves into the concept of the American dream and what drives us as artists to constantly strive for more. It encapsulates the complex emotions and aspirations that fuel our creative endeavors.

The production of this music video was truly a remarkable journey. From the incredible team that came together to the creative power that fueled every moment, and our very special thanks to SAS Studios for giving us the opportunity to utilize their resources, I am filled with gratitude. Without the crew’s dedication and expertise, this project would not have been possible. “

ABOUT GREGG GARVEY

Garvey honed his self-taught musical skills in the rural Moose Lake area of Minnesota. A transitional period in Minneapolis allowed for his growth as a writer and performer, culminating in an album, two EP’s, tours, and several television music placements with garage band The Brutes. Now in Los Angeles, Garvey has taken a deep dive into his particular brand of dreamy, meditative pop and vintage rock soul, that brings together a wide swathe of influences—from Scott Walker to David Sylvian, Pink Floyd to Nick Drake. Upon being picked up by Lolipop Records, Garvey released his debut solo album in 2016. He’s grown his local fanbase with gigs at clubs including The Echo, The Resident, Harvard & Stone, and Hotel Café and has a new album ready for release through Los Angeles label Nomad Eel Records.
